February 26, 2014 - Carla Tracy
Panda Express will donate almost $2,000 to Maui’s Wailuku Elementary School’s 4th grade class during a red-carpet event at 5 p.m. today at its Kahului outlet near Walmart at 55 Pakaula St. in Kahului.
The class will receive the donation as the winner of Panda’s Back-to-School Fundraising Challenge, which allows non profits to raise funds at hosted events at the restaurant. Vice principle, Tracy Lui and teacher, Debra Ho, will accept the prize along with the students.
Wailuku Elementary’s 4th grade class raised $780, and the company added an additional $1,000 for a total donation of $1,780. The donation will allow the class to attend Ulalena, a musical which depicts Maui’s rich cultural history through Hawaiian music and dance.
“Supporting local organizations is a core part of Panda’s culture,” said John Zhang, Panda’s regional director of Operations for Hawaii. "We’re proud to be America’s favorite Chinese restaurant, and recognize the responsibilities that accompany that title, such as providing support for programs that enrich the communities where our guests live and work.”
“On behalf of the fourth grade team, we truly appreciate Panda’s commitment to our community,” said Debra Ho, 4th Grade Teacher Representative at Wailuku Elementary School. “[Panda’s donation] enables our students to go beyond classroom learning and deepen their appreciation for and understanding of Hawaii’s history.”
