February 15, 2014 - Robert Collias
For the second state tournament game in a row, the Lahainaluna girls basketball team dominated the boards, outrebounding Hilo 52-30 in a 57-47 win for the top-ranked, top-seeded Lunas in tonight's semifinal at McKinley Gym. The Lunas controlled the offensive glass, 21-8.
In their 61-57 quarterfinal win over Maryknoll last week, the Lunas outrebounded the Spartans 50-25 total and 25-10 on the offensive end. Fiemea Hafoka had 12 rebounds and Folau Hafoka (no relation) had 11 on Friday night.
Loke Basques, the lone senior on the roster, was the only Luna to shoot better than 50 percent, finishing 6-for-10 from the field, 1-for-2 from 3, and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line on the way to game-high 17 points. The Lunas were 9-for-19 from the free-throw line in their last game, 9-for-16 on Friday. Hilo was 10-for-22 from the line.
Lahainaluna was 6-for-20 from 3-point range after going 10-for-18 against Maryknoll. Hilo was 3-for-7 from long range.
The Lunas' defense allowed Hilo to shoot just 17-for-47 from the field, while the Lunas were 21-for-60 thanks to their domination of the boards.
Lahainaluna trailed 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied for a 27-25 lead at halftime.
Folau Hafoka added 12 points and three steals. She has 20 points, 19 rebounds, and eight steals in two state tournament games.
The Lunas go after their second state title in five years Saturday against third-seeded Punahou, a 53-48 winner over Mililani in the late semifinal. Lahainaluna beat Punahou 51-50 in November.
