Quite a night for Lunas and fans at Lahaina Civic Center
February 9, 2014 - Robert Collias
In what I think is the first state girls basketball tournament game ever held on Maui, the top-ranked, top-seeded Lahainaluna girls beat a tough Maryknoll team 61-57 in as fun an atmosphere as any prep girls game is going to see almost anywhere.
Here is the start to my story — and don't forget to check The Maui News Sports Report on Monday for much more on this game:
LAHAINA - It wasn't until Folau Hafoka cradled the final rebound and fired an outlet pass downcourt that the Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team and about 1,800 of the Lunas' closest friends could breathe.
The Lunas held on in an electric atmosphere at a crowded Lahaina Civic Center for a 61-57 win over Maryknoll in a Hawaiian Airlines Division I Girls State Championship quarterfinal Saturday night.
The top-seeded Lunas (15-0) advanced to a semifinal on Friday at the McKinley gym against Hilo, a 62-61 winner over No. 4 Roosevelt on Saturday at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
