Lady Lunas win 99th MIL game in a row
January 16, 2014 - Robert Collias
Here is a short story I just filed from Lahainaluna Gymnasium (read it here, because it may not all fit in the Thursday paper):
LAHAINA -- The Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team ran its Maui Interscholastic League all-sport-record winning streak to 99 games in a row with a 77-14 win over King Kekaulike Wednesday night in front of a packed house in the Lahainaluna gym.
The Lunas (12-0) finished their seventh straight perfect regular league season on the night lone senior Loke Basques played her final home game. Basques scored 17 points before her ceremonial final layup, while Taylor Bates had 18, Folau Hafoka added 13, and Fiemea Hafoka added 11.
The Lunas, ranked first in the state by scoringlive.com and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, can reach 100 straight wins in MIL play next Thursday in the semifinals of the MIL tournament.
"It's incredible, basically, it's incredible," Lahainaluna coach Todd Rickard said. "A lot of this has been from the past teams -- it's the whole program in general. To sustain this and continue this streak is just unheard of."
KING KEKAULIKE (14) Maile Naito 0, Brooks Carillo 1, Teeshawna Amor-Mashinio 0, Dasya Tavares 11, Linzee Buwa 0, Danielle Higashi 0, Brandi Carillo 1, Keiolani Falcum 0, Leah Cayaban 0, Karlee Peters 1, Sylvania Amor 0.
LAHAINALUNA (77) Mina Faamu 3, Fiemea Hafoka 11, Kalena Balingit 0, Taylor Bates 18, Loke Basques 17, Kyla Blando 0, Keleah-Aiko Koloi 4, Lisa Hafoka 2, Lindsey Bates 4, Aloha Salem 5, Folau Hafoka 13, Kahlo Uhila 0.
Read all about the Lunas-Sabers boys game that is now going on in Thursday's paper.
