Our wall-to-wall coverage of the Hyundai TOC at Kapalua
January 4, 2014 - Robert Collias
As always, we cover the Hyundai Tournament of Champions with all the firepower we can muster.
From yours truly and Chris Sugidono — as talented a young journalist as I have ever worked with — and photographer Matt Thayer on site, to the incredible work that our two-man desk crew gets done, it is, IMHO, the best total-package look at this tournament that there is anywhere.
Here are the links from today's paper, worth the price for the stellar work that sports editor Brad Sherman and my all-around colleague Kyle Sakamoto do putting all that we throw at them together in a nifty, one-stop package:
— My first-round gamer with thoughts from the four leaders on the soft conditions that greeted them in various weather throughout Friday's first round.
— Sugidono's fun read on the 13 newcomers, many of whom played like veterans in the 30-man field.
— Webb Simpson says the winners-only format here is just right.
— The notebook we put together.
— Our hole of the day.
— And last, but not least, my choice for quote of the day that did not make the cut:
"I just tried too hard. It was a little into the wind and I was trying to push it to get near the green in two, and I actually missed the fairway, which is pretty hard to do for anybody on that hole. That's probably the second largest fairway outside of Hilton Head, 18, we'll have all year and I've actually missed it two out of the three times I've played it now."
—Jordan Spieth on his drive on the 663-yard 18th hole, where he carded a birdie 4.
I will try to get an update or two done here as today progresses and Sherman will post a breaking news story on who is leading after round two.
