Wine 101: Increase Your Knowledge of Fine Wines
September 23, 2013 - Carla Tracy
Love wines? Work in the food and beverage industry? Either way, you’ll want to take the five-week course, “Wine 101,” starting Sept. 24 and flowing every Tuesday evening throughout October at UH Maui Campus. Class hours are 7 to 9 p.m.
“I’ve implemented many new additions geared towards individuals studying for Level 1 (Introductory Course & Exam), Level 2 Certified & Advanced Sommelier Exams — eventually leading to the Master Sommelier Degree,” says instructor Alan Jahns.
“You’re guaranteed to taste eight to ten different wines each evening (no repeat selections from previous classes). Past classes have included an optional Saturday morning tour at Maui’s Winery at Ulupalakua — for hands-on grape growing and wine-making experiences. This has yet to be confirmed, but hopefully we’ll be able to include this again as part of this Fall’s class.”
Cost of $379 covers costs of all handouts and wines.
“I can make no promises, but in the past some participants have taken advantage of the State of Hawaii’s Workforce Development program, to help any employees looking for discounts on the costs of the class.
Depending on Workforce Development’s current finances, they reimburse employers (50 percent or more) for sending employees to my wine class! I believe you'll still need to pay for class upfront --- and the State will reimburse your employer).”
Alan R Jahns is the Wine Division Manager for Paradise Beverages, Inc. Of course, you must be 21 and older to participate.
The classes will be held in the Laulima Building (Room #106). For registration, call EdVenture at 984-3231 to register (Class #353S13).
