Feets, do yo' stuff

June 25, 2013 - Harry Eagar

Bloomberg News reports that the Army is planning to shrink by 12 brigades, about 4 divisions.

Invasions by state armies are almost unheard of any more.

Anything our army is asked to do will be more in the nature of a police action. Preferably, we would just support the national police of a functioning state under stress, but that isn't the kind of place we go.

If you are policing, you need feet on the beat. Therefore, more infantry, not less.

Did we learn nothing in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Yes, we learned nothing.

Not all American interventions ended badly, but the bigger the intervention, the more spectacularly bad the result. Cambodia, for example.

That's how the military is thinking, but we've proved in Iraq and Afghanistan that it doesn't work. Drones cannot talk to people, get to know the neighbors, all the things that good policing includes.

Of course, the concept of good policing is unknown in just about all the trouble spots we manage to get ourselves into. It would help if our government would support democratic and honest factions, but we almost never do. We just try to eradicate them. (See Vietnam.)
