The Chickens of Pu’unene Avenue and Dairy Road

Maui News: Humane Society To Hatch A Plan For Chicken Nuisance

Why did the chicken cross the road?

More importantly, why are the chickens at the intersection of Pu’unene Avenue – in ‘olelo Hawai’i “the hill where the nene are” -- and Dairy Road (named after the Pu’unene Dairy, once owned by H C & S, and sold to Haleakala Dairy in 1951).

Who owns these chickens?

If I opened my door and took one into my car, am I a chicken-thief? Or they are ready to go for a ride?

These chickens, a couple of them resplendent roosters, strut around sometimes on my way home, often on a Friday evening, during the “rush hour” traffic that flows towards Walmart and Costco.

I once lowered my window and stared at the chickens – it is truly amazing that they never get hit by a car. They just scoot away just-in-time.

These chickens must be related to some fowl living near our Kihei apartment – they start crowing just before sunrise, and I try to muffle their crowing by placing a pillow on my ears.

But I always hear them through my pillow and I think dark thoughts about these fowl creatures.
