Decision time this week for Browns, Maiava
March 6, 2013 - Robert Collias
Kaluka Maiava, the former Baldwin and USC standout and current Cleveland Brown, told me in January that he is keeping his free-agent options open.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto, Maiava is one of the few of the Browns' 16 free agents they should consider keeping (from a Tuesday column):
Q: Do you see them keeping anyone?
A: Long snapper Christian Yount is a restricted free agent and he did a good job. Kaluka Maiava may return if the price is cheap, as he's a backup linebacker and special teams player. They don't like Reggie Hodges and have already brought in punter Spencer Lanning, so Hodges is gone.
Maiava mentioned to me a date of March 9 (Saturday) for things to be decided between himself, agent Kenny Zuckerman and the Browns:
"Secret, but we are definitely talking to people," he said in late January at former Baldwin teammate Cody Nakamura's Hard Naks Camp. "Obviously, that's the business part, but we are definitely talking to teams and if Cleveland decides to re-sign me, I love Cleveland. We'll just see what happens."
The free agency period starts March 12, which is Tuesday. Maiava did not make NFL.com's list of the top 85 free agents or 20 or so more who "just missed the cut."
