Victorino sits, trade talk intensifies

July 8, 2012 - Robert Collias
I was just watching "Baseball Tonight" where Karl Ravech and John Kruk were talking about Shane Victorino sitting out today's game.

First, they talked about Victorino "pouting" because he got to the ballpark and saw he was hitting seventh in the lineup — something he hasn't done since 2010. Later, they said Victorino could not be located prior to the game and they had to make a lineup change. Still later, the BT duo said reports were that Victorino, who is hitting .245, was in the inside batting cage taking extra swings.

Kruk, who is never at a loss for words, said he didn't "know what to believe," but that this sort of thing would not have happened in his days as a Phillie. "We had a guy who would've taken him by the scruff of the jersey and said, 'That is not the way we do things around here,' " Kruk said on air. Ravech asked Kruk who he was referring to. "Darren Daulton," Kruk said.

Victorino's replacement for today's game, Jason Pridie, smacked a two-run home run and doubled home a run in first two at-bats. Victorino has one double, no home runs, and four RBIs in his last 26 games.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports says that it was a manager's decision to sit Victorino and that his time in Philly appears short.

Another Philadlephia website quoted Manuel during his post-game press conference. Manuel said Victorino was “absolutely not” upset about hitting seventh.

“That’s the first thing I asked him,” Manuel said. “He said he understood. He was down because of his performance.”

This Phillies phan says the team should trade Victorino before the July 31 deadline.

And, finally, there is this blog from the Philadelpiha Inquirer comparing Victorino's number's this season to Jayson Werth's 2010 numbers, the year before Werth signed a $126 million contract with the Nationals. It is titled "Hawaiian Punchless."
