Cinco de Mayo tequila tales
May 4, 2012 - Carla Tracy
Hmm. . . If you were intrigued by the headline enough to click on the blog, you must be interested in the topic. Since the biggest tequila-drinking holiday is coming up on Saturday, May 5, let’s talk tequila. Plus, Mother’s Day is coming right up May 13 and the people from Partida Tequila have something to say about it.
“ ‘Like the King of Soul once sang, ‘This is a man's world, but it wouldn't be nothing without a woman or a girl.’” says Nora O’Malley. “Fitting words, especially on May 13th. When the world is out buying Mom cliché flowers, chocolates and candles, do one better and treat her like royalty with something that will make Dad's jaw drop.”
She’s talking Tequila Partida.
We also hear that Tequila Avión was deemed Best White Spirit at the 2012 San Francisco World Spirits Competition last month.
“In addition to winning Double Gold and Best Tequila, Tequila Avión Silver stole the Best White Spirit category—beating all other vodkas, gins, and rums who dared to compete,” states the press release. “Made from blue agave plants grown in Mexico, tequila has sparked a fire on this side of the border that won’t soon go out,” says Lisa Hawkins of the Distilled Spirits Council.
“Since 2002, Tequila has continued to be one of the fastest growing spirits categories. Over nearly a decade, U.S. imports of Tequila have grown 67% - an average rate of 5.8% per year —- increasing from just 7.2 million cases in 2002 to nearly 12 million in 2011.”
“While the margarita remains America’s most popular cocktail, more and more consumers are buying Super Premium sipping tequilas that are enjoyed neat or over ice. In fact, sales of Super Premium tequilas have nearly quadruple since 2002.”
Here are some simple tequila cocktail recipes beyond the margarita for those who might want to raise a glass in celebration of Cinco de Mayo at home with friends. But, please, don’t drink and drive.
Tequila Terminology 101:
· Blanco – aged under two months, this style of tequila is the purest, and imparts the natural flavors of the blue agave plant.
· Reposado – aged two to twelve months, this tequila meshes the mellowing traits of wood with the herbal qualities of the blue agave juice.
· Anejo – aged over one year, An?ejo tequilas possess vanilla flavors of the oak in which they’re aged.
Tequila Cocktail Recipes: Beyond the Margarita
1 oz tequila
1 oz cranberry juice
½ oz orange flavored liqueur
¼ oz fresh lime juice
Shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a slice of orange.
1.5 oz tequila
Grapefruit soda (not juice)
½ oz fresh lime juice
Pour all ingredients over ice in a highball glass.
Sip one of these cocktails, mash up some guacamole and crunch some chips. If you don’t want to mix one at home, both Ruth’s Chris Steak House locations on Maui are offering drink specials for the Mexican holiday. Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone!
