Negrini signs with ODU
May 1, 2012 - Robert Collias
I filed this brief earlier today for Tuesday's paper:
NORFOLK, Va. — Former Baldwin High School All-Star shortstop Jordan Negrini signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Old Dominion University, Monarchs head coach Chris Finwood announced on Monday.
Negrini, a Kihei resident who is currently a sophomore at Yavapai Junior College in Arizona, joins lefthanded pitcher Ryan Yarbrough from Lakeland, Fla., and Santa Fe College in Finwood's announcement.
In 53 games for Yavapai this season, Negrini is hitting .374 with two homers, two triples, 19 doubles, 50 runs scored, 46 RBIs, 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts and has a .476 on-base percentage. Last year, he saw action in 46 games for the Roughriders, hitting .319 with nine stolen bases.
Negrini was a three-year starting shortstop at Baldwin where he was team captain and Maui Interscholastic League All-Star for the 2010 Baldwin team that lost in the state final to Punahou. He represented Hawaii in the Japan Goodwill High school Federation in 2009 and was one of 18 players selected from the state to travel to Japan and play against schools all across that country.
"We are really excited about adding Jordan to our spring signing class," Finwood said in a school press release. "He is a wonderful young man and having a great year for Yavapai. He is in among the leaders in most offensive catagories in the state of Arizona juco baseball and can play anywhere on the infield. We expect him to be a big contributor immediately."
Negrini and Yarbrough will join the Monarchs' 10 signees from the fall.
