No NFL Combine for Maui guys

February 8, 2012 - Robert Collias
The official invite list to the NFL Combine is out and for the Maui candidates, unfortunately, the news is not good — none of the Maui players I thought might have a shot got one.

UCLA center Kai Maiava, a 2007 Baldwin graduate, had the best chance, IMHO, and did not receive an invitation. He is rated as the 27th-best center out of 88 by

University of Hawaii players with Maui ties, Kaniela Tuipulotu and Andrew Faaumu — both former Lunas — also got no combine calls, a surprise for me on Tui's part.

Utah senior Tevita Finau, who had a stellar showing in his final college game with 10 tackles, one for a loss, in the Utes' 30-27 Sun Bowl win over Georgia Tech, is also not going to the combine.

The only UH player to get an invite was defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga.

The bottom line for these players is that they will most likely have to go the undrafted free-agent route to get an NFL shot. It says here that "the goal of the (selection) committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft."
