Baldwin fake punt backfires, Bears trail 21-0 at halftime
November 18, 2011 - Robert Collias
HALAWA, Oahu — The Baldwin High School football team trails 21-0 at halftime of their First Hawaiian Bank state semifinal against Punahou after the Bears tried a fake punt on fourth-and-12 from the own 40 with 1:19 left in the first half.
The Buffanblu needed just three plays and 48 seconds to go 34 yards to push their lead to 21-0 at halftime.
On the first two Bears' punts of the first half, the Buffanblu did not put much of a rush on and on the third one they roughed Pasoni Tasini. On the fourth punt, again there was little rush and the Bears decided to try the fake on their fifth, but with a heavy rush on that one, Tasini had no chance and was dropped for a loss of six yards.
The stats reflect the score. Baldwin had 29 yards in the first half, Punahou 184.
The Bears stopped the Buffanblun on their first possession of the second half, but then the relentless Punahou pass rush flushed Keelan Ewaliko from the pocket and he fumbled, setting up a 43-yard touchdown drive capped by a beautiful diving catch by Cody Lee to make it 28-0 with 7:14 left in the third.
Unless this thing turns, this will probably be the last update until I file my story, probaly around 8 p.m.
