Sam Cyr in tie for 22nd after first round of Q School first stage
October 27, 2011 - Robert Collias
I filed this brief on Makawao golfer Sam Cyr earlier today for Thursday's paper:
BEAUMONT, Calif. — Sam Cyr birdied his last three holes to shoot a 2-under-par 70 at Oak Valley Golf Club to stand in a tie for 22nd on Wednesday in the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School.
Cyr, a King Kekaulike High School graduate and two-time NAIA champion at Point Loma Nazarene University, had birdies on 1 and 4, and bogeys on 2, 3, and 8 before his final rally.
The 2011 Maui Open and 2010 Mid-Pacific Open champion from Makawao has advanced from to the second stage of Q School each of the last two years, but his bid has ended there.
Oak Valley is one of 13 sites for the first stage and the number of qualifiers for the second stage will be announced this week.
The second stage is Nov. 15-18 at three sites, while the final stage — where PGA and Nationwide tour cards are on the line — is Nov. 30-Dec. 5 at PGA West in Florida.
