Uyechi only Maui player named to NAL All-Star team
October 14, 2011 - Robert Collias
Relief pitcher Clayton Uyechi, a University of Hawaii-Hilo graduate, wasthe only Na Koa Ikaika Maui player named to the North American League All-Star team, released on Thursday.
Uyechi had an outstanding season as Maui's closer in the hitter-friendly league — 1.65 ERA, 29 K, 15 BB, 23 H, 3 SV, 32.2 IP.
Uyechi went to the Winnipeg of the American Association — rejoining 2010 Na Koa pitching coach Brenadn Segara and closer Jamie Vermilyea — after Na Koa's season was stopped short of completion (at 29-40) and helped the Goldeyes make the playoffs, where they lost to the St. Paul Saints in the fifth game in the semifinals. In five innings over four appearances there, he allowed five earned runs and did not have a decision or save.
Don't expect to see Uyechi back to play for Maui in 2012. His option was picked up on Wednesday by the Goldeyes, along with Vermilyea's.
