September 30, 2011 - Carla Tracy
Filipino-American History Month falls in October and so the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation will present the Maui Fil-Am Heritage Festival on Saturday, October 8 at the Maui Mall in Kahului.
“The Maui Filipino Chamber Foundation is presenting the Maui Fil-Am Heritage to promote business as well as share our culture, our heritage with Maui’s residents and visitors,” said Elizabeth Ayson, president.
“In 2008, Act 15 designated October of each year as Filipino American History Month and we’re happy to help celebrate.”
The Fil-Am Festival kicks off on center stage at 10 a.m. with back to back entertainment. In addition, there will be nine restaurants serving Filipino food, including Four Sisters Kitchen in Wailuku and more.
Along with the entertainment and food, there will be several contests, including the Master P-Noy Chef Cook Off, featuring a few of Maui’s best chefs of Filipino ancestry; the Speedy Balut (fertilized egg) Eating Contest, and Filipino Attire Contests for Women and Men. The winners of the attire contests will receive airfare to Las Vegas courtesy of Noble Travel.
“Throughout the day, drawings for airfare to the Philippines, courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines and Philippine Airlines will be held,” says Ayson. “Restrictions do apply such as only one entry per person, must be over eighteen years of age, and must be present to win with proper identification.”
“For more information and to keep updated as to the Festival’s program of events, visit the Chamber’s website at Maui Filipino Website.
