Robert Mondavi’s widow to appear at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel dinner

September 2, 2011 - Carla Tracy

Anyone heading to the Big Island next week? Former Maui chef George Gomes, Jr. now rules the famous Rockefeller Kitchen at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii.

Sept. 9, he’ll prepare the food for the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel’s Robert Mondavi Wine Dinner with Margrit Biever Mondavi as special guest. She’s the lively widow of Robert Mondavi, founder of that famous winery empire. It will be held in the hotel’s Garden Room.

In addition, Gomes will put together a special wine and food pairing workshop on Sept. 10.

I remember sitting next to Michael Mondavi in the Rockefeller Kitchen some years ago at a special chef’s table event. It was an experience I'll never forget. I was a little nervous. But Michael was kind and friendly, a real down to earth guy. The kitchen was built back in the 1960s, but it still rivals any hotel kitchen to this day.

“Don’t miss this great opportunity to meet Mrs. Mondavi and to taste Robert Mondavi wines paired with savory cuisine created specially for the event by hotel Executive Chef, George Gomes, Jr.,” says publicist Dara Lum. “Cost is $125 per person, plus tax and gratuity.”

On Maui, Gomes used to cook for acclaimed French chef Jean Marie Josselin at A Pacific Cafe in Kihei. The location is now Stella Blues Cafe. At the Mondavi dinner, he’ll do a sustainable poke bar, deep-sea local onaga, seared squab breast, lamb three ways, and a study in Waimea strawberry with three tastes, three textrues and three stages.

“In addition to the wine dinner, a special Wine and Food Pairing Workshop with Mrs. Mondavi and Chef Gomes will be held on Saturday, September 10 at 11 am at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Manta Pavillion & Wine Bar. Cost is $30 per person and with limited space of 30 guests. Package for September 9th dinner plus workshop is $145 per person.”

Each month, a winery is invited by Mauna Kea Beach Hotel’s sommelier to showcase wines perfectly paired with its Executive Chef, George Gomes, Jr.’s cuisine. Below is the special wine series for the remainder of the year:

October 12, 2011 – Taste of Australia

November 11, 2011 – Foxen Winery

December 16, 2011 – Patz & Hall Winery
