The noblest things happen over lunch at — Hotel Wailea

June 3, 2011 - Carla Tracy

Hotel Wailea, formerly known as Diamond Resort, presented seven $1,000 Scholarship Awards to Maui high school students at a recent luncheon in the resort.

”Since 1989, the hotel has awarded a total of $141,500 to 141 of Maui County’s graduating seniors who are seeking higher education,” states a press release. “In 2008, the Diamond Resort changed its ownership and the hotel changed its name to Hotel Wailea, but kept the tradition of giving to promising young people.”

“Despite the economic environment and the passing of Mr. Nakata, founder of the scholarship, we are all proud that we were still able to continue this tradition,” says Kyoko Kimura, managing director of the resort.

Some of those who attended the luncheon are pictured at right. Click on the picture to enlarge it. Mayor Alan Arakawa is in the front row, from left, followed by Chelsey Mei Borge of Maui High School, Hija Mae Bautista of Lahainaluna High School, Desiree Valencia of King Kekaulike High School, Brytne Okuhata of King Kekaulike High School, and Ashley Hudson of H.P. Baldwin High School. In the back are Hotel Wailea’s Managing Director Kyoko Kimura and General Manager Markus Schale.

Scholarship recipients not in picture are Stephen Adolfson of Lahainaluna High School, and Miracle Helekahi of Hana High School.

For the uninitiated, Hotel Wailea is the home of Capische?, one of the top restaurants on Maui. The resort’s signature restaurant will set the stage for two parties at the upcoming Maui Film Festival in Wailea, the opener on June 15 and the grand finale June 19.
