“Nine, Wine and Dine" tees off in West Maui

May 24, 2011 - Carla Tracy

I remember a restaurateur joking with me that he prefers golfers as customers as “golfers are the ones who drink while tennis players just like to sip Perrier.”

Well, I’m not sure if that is true or not, but a new promotion is targeted toward golfers who have a penchant for fine wine and cuisine.

The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas in Kaanapali will partner with Kaanapali Golf Course to tee off the inaugural “Nine, Wine and Dine” series Wednesday, June 1.

“Priced at $99 per person, the package includes 9-hole game of golf starting at 3 p.m. at Royal Kaanapali Course, followed by a wine reception at 6 p.m. at the resort’s award-winning restaurant Pulehu, an Italian Grill,” says publicist Sumithra Balraj.

"A superb four-course wine dinner will be served throughout the evening with seating available between the hours of 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Non-golfers, too, can indulge in the wine dinner for $75 per person.”

Executive Chef Francois Milliet and Director of Outlets Javier Barberi have created a meal paired with wines from Seghesio Family Vineyards, renowned for their exceptional Zinfandel and Italian varietals.

“While Pulehu had hosted several excellent wine dinners in the past, this would be our first golf wine dinner pairing and we look forward to creating a distinctive experience,” says Javier. “The wine selection will complement the unique flavors that include some of the finest local produce such as the Maui Cattle Co. beef short rib served with butternut squash farro accompanied by a glass of Sangiovese 2008 red Italian wine.”

The first course paired with Pinot Grigio 2009 is hickory smoked salmon carpaccio served with Maui onion compote, pistachio oil and lemon aioli; followed by a second course of Kalamata olives crusted lamb rack with spinach, pancetta and herb gnocchi paired with Zinfandel “Sonoma County” 2009. Dessert is chocolate tart with caramelized banana Gianduja cream and coconut gelato paired with Seghesio Digestive.
