SPRING WIND QUINTET FREE PERFORMANCE

The Chamber Music Hawaii Spring Wind Quintet, recognized as one of the nation's leading wind quintets, will present a free performance at 6:30 tonight at Wailuku Public Library, 251 High St. The quintet, a major force in the development of chamber music in Hawaii, will perform a selection of classical music and some arrangements of traditional Hawaiian songs. The program will also include demonstrations of how each instrument's sound is made, how the quintet performs together and a question-and-answer session. Second Friday, Lahaina

FILM SCREENING TO KICK OFF SURF EVENT

To kick off Ian Walsh's ninth annual Menehune Mayhem surf contest and celebration, the Maui pro surfer and Red Bull will be screening "Red Bull Soundwave" Walsh's Jaws film at 9 tonight. The 21-and-older event will be held at Lulu's Lahaina.

FRIDAY, MARCH 9

SOUNDS OF LAHAINA TO SWEEP STREETS

Lahaina's Second Friday street party will showcase the sounds of Lahaina throughout Front Street and its surrounding areas from 6 to 9 p.m. A blessing by the cast of " 'Ulalena" will be held at the sea wall adjacent to Hard Rock Caf. Live music at Campbell Park will feature Wilmont Kahaiali'i, 5 to 6 p.m.; Al Nip, 6 to 7 p.m.; and Eddie Tanaka, 7 to 8 p.m. Other entertainment includes The Global Battle of the Bands finals at 8 p.m. at Hard Rock Caf; Kahaiali'i, 6 to 9 p.m. at The Pioneer Inn; Visibly Shaken, 8 to 10 p.m. at Moose McGillycuddy's; Maui Jazz Society, 7 to 10 p.m. at Longhi's Lahaina; and live music at Kimo's and Blue Lagoon. Hula halau Keala Kahinano O Puna will perform at 5:45 p.m., followed by a karaoke contest hosted by Toddy Lilikoi, at The Wharf Cinema Center. FREE CINEMA NIGHT: 'CLOSE ENCOUNTERS'

OVERTONE WILL TAKE THE STAGE AT MACC

South African a cappella group Overtone, comprising six young men discovered by Dina Eastwood and Clint Eastwood in 2009 and brought to America to record the soundtrack to Clint's "Invictus," will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Maui Arts & Cultural Center's McCoy Studio Theater. MENEHUNE MAYHEM'S SURF, PRIZES, MUSIC

Join pro surfers for a swell time at the ninth annual "Ian's Walsh's Menehune Mayhem" surf competition and celebration Saturday at Ho'okipa Beach Park in Kuau. The daylong amateur youth surf contest from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. includes prizes, a scavenger hunt and activities, and features live performances by one of Honolulu's top DJs, DJ Eskae, along with Red Red Bull Thre3style champion, DJ Compose.
